RAINY DAYS ARE MADE OF THESE...

1 A steaming hot (giant) cup of coffee (of course!) and even better conversation

2 A good book (or e-book, in my case) and a light quilt to snuggle in to

3 A long drive (alone, with the significant other, friends... you pick)
... Yes, view from the front seat =)

4 Unexpected visitors at the kitchen window

5 Fritters (potatoes, I love you all, unconditionally!)
... No pics. They got eaten (and shared with above said visitor) :D

That's been what this past weekend's been like for the most part, with a movie thrown in. And some quality family time.

THE MONSOONS ARE HERE!

Finally! Given the dismal non-starter of a monsoon last year this time, heralding in the rains a few days ago (and pleasantly early to boot) was such a welcome respite to the heat, humidity and random fretting about oh-when-will-it-rain-will-it-ever-rain.

For someone who loves the rains as much as I do, nothing can be more welcome than the wholesome cleanliness that the showers bring in. Dusty leaves on  trees crying out for a rinse just outside my windows, heat that seems to ooze out of every pore and the misery of having to step out in such scorching weather - well, they're now a thing of the past, at least for the next few months.

That gorgeous, almost edible fragrance (calling it smell just doesn't cut it) of the moist earth, the heavenly fuzzy plump peaches, deep red cherries and pink lychees flooding the local markets, fun and flirty umbrellas... the awesomeness (for lack of a better word, believe me) just doesn't end.

For those with a slightly lot more dismal viewpoint, there's flooded roads, traffic snarls, disrupted public transport systems, infection... ugh. I could go on, but I choose not to.

Go on, get out that rain wear (or maybe not; have you tried getting drenched by the sea, munching on hot lime-infused corn-on-the-cob?) and enjoy the rains! You only live once.

... AND THE INFRASTRUCTURE CRUMBLES AGAIN

Yesterday was a day of torrential rainfall in the city. It started to rain around mid-afternoon, and by evening, even those proverbial cats and dogs were overshadowed.

People started to leave work earlier than they otherwise would, trains were running late, roads were flooded - yes, flooded, with much more than knee-high water in places - and let's not even start on the traffic. My usual 45-minute commute took me closer to three hours, and apparently I was one of the luckier ones, both in terms of comfort and travel time. Why? Because while local trains were bravely ploughing along, they were devoid of electricity - ergo no fans - and were packed beyond imagination. Those who travel by train here would know what I mean, and for the others - let me see - it's about four people to a square foot of space. With maybe one more squeezed in for good measure. So there's heat, humidity levels at a crazy high, and no light (save for what would filter in from the windows and the doorways) to speak of. And then, these same trains made unscheduled halts for as much as an hour between stations, owing to flooded railway tracks.

On the roads, while I was safely ensconced in the air conditioned confines of my cab, negotiating the traffic was a nightmare. (I'd thought ahead and booked myself a cab in the morning itself; having made up my mind that it wouldn't be fun to drive myself home in the evening. Thank goodness for instincts.) Plugged in to my music, I'm glad I wasn't the cabbie. So there you go, not that the roads were brilliant, either. To add to the vehicles, people were spilling over on to the roads (not that we use our pavements to walk  on, even on a good day) and adding to the treacherous driving conditions. Of course, there was no saying where the potholes might be, so negotiating your way (both humans and cars) was tricky. Unless you were an SUV, in which case you barrelled on regardless.

This morning, while the rain continues - though feebly, in comparison to yesterday - the chaos does too, although to a smaller extent. Trains still continue to ply late, traffic snarls exist, and people troop in to work close to noon. Happy employees like the significant other are told to work out of home, so as I leave earlier this morning, he is happily sunk into the couch with his morning cuppa and the papers. Hmph. Envy.

The point of this rambling is just one: year after year, the city goes through the same situation, at least once every monsoon. Nothing changes, really, but that the number of people braving the mess have grown ten-fold, while the infrastructure has shrunk ten times. Development projects, while more appealing than food at a Michelin star restaurant on paper, are just that - on paper. They don't materialise, and when they eventually do - it's years too little and too late. What ails the city? Lack of one cohesive administrative body, one that takes accountability for its actions. With the buck being passed from one to the other (given the number that claim to be working for the city), there isn't any one that stands up, acknowledges that they're responsible, and functions as such.

We keep drawing parallels between the capital city and financial capital. Mercifully for them, there is just the one body that is accountable for the city's infrastructure. That is why you see projects being flagged off, and completed within a reasonable time frame. There is someone who stops to question what's happening - or isn't. The reasons for this - votes, public support at elections - may be questioned by a faction, yes. But if that's the case - I say, so what? Wouldn't you want to vote for such a party/ person? At least the work's getting done, which is why you elect someone in the first place. So no, there is no favouritism per se. It's initiative. And drive.

Things can change here too. All it needs is a spark.

For now -  and for a few more monsoons, seemingly - maybe we'd best invest in a boat.

MUSH

It's official - love is in the air.

Thank you, Mumbai Monsoons, for this gorgeous weather, for the air heavy with rain. For these wonderful evenings filled with heavenly breeze and dark grey skies laden with promise.

Taken a walk by the sea lately? Or just sat there, either alone, or with somebody you care deeply about? Both are experiences in themselves, one not to be confused with the other, and both to have been had. There's something about the solitude that the darkening evenings provide, a velveteen shrug that envelopes you as you stare out at the water, contemplating nothing... something... everything. If with someone you care about, the experience is probably even more highly sensitised.

I have no idea what it is about the sea, but there it is. It's a reflection of myriad emotions, of who you are and what you can be. It's a reflection of your dreams, hopes and desires. It's this mirror, one that lets you see.

Go on, experience the magic.

WAVES

Waves
lashing,
roaring,
white foam.

Coming in from the sea
to pay obeisance at your feet.

Cooling,
tickling,
playful.

They speak
a language of their own.

SUNSHINE!

...after some zillion and one days of rain. Hurrah for the bright blue skies and shiny green leaves!
Let's make a list (oooh!) of sun-filled likes:
1. No damp
2. The dog stays dry (not that I have one, unfortunately)
3. So do the rugs and carpets (these I do)
4. No fungus/ suspicious ugly growths on walls (this itself makes it worthwhile)
5. Dry footwear (bring on the strappy sandals, do!)
6. No ruined pedicures (and ergo pretty feet)
7. No stupid umbrellas that overturn at the slightest hint of a breeze (and get you wet in the rain, bah)
8. No frizzy hair (close to the non-appearance of fungus, close)
9. No excuse to not go on my evening walks (wait, wrong list...)

Unrelated, but stay tuned for a festival update!

THE RAINMAN COMETH

... and never go away. Or so it seems. Thought I'd gotten done with my cribbing about the rain for this year, really. About the damp, wet dog smell on everything. About the fugly fungus everywhere. Ick. Ick. On the housework front, laundry that just doesn't dry, rainwater that craftily sneaks in from invisible cracks in the wall. Bah.
So the MET has predicted three days of incessant rain, which roughly means we're looking at maybe five-odd days or so, given that the MET track record is really nothing to write home about.
How do I get to work today? I wish I were a school student, just for the day - schools have been asked to close, given the rains. (Hmph. Distressing not to be able to look 13 instead of 30 some days.) Instead, I brave the rain, waterlogged streets, human and vehicular traffic and cautiously ease my way into the parking lot at work.

Getting home, you ask? Rinse, repeat.

WEATHER UPDATE

Mundane, you think?

Well, we've I've been hoping for clear skies since a while now, given that it's been some months of dull, dreary grey now. While romantic and all (only out of a window, or walking by the sea), there isn't anything even remotely so about having to wade through ankle-deep water, or worse. And of course, bugs. Ick. And fungus. Ick. Ick.

Being a home owner (and one living close to the sea) makes it worse: there are these hideous, fugly, just plain gross forms of fungi sprouting out the walls. I shudder to even take a swipe at them with a paper towel, because as I approach them, they seem to grow in size, smell putrid and generally reach out to me with musty little feelers. Ulp. Strategy: Get gooseflesh on arms and down the spine. Leave paper towel as-is, and scream for the significant other to help, i.e. clean away the creepies. Which he does (bless him), but only after having a go with the camera. Do we really need visual reminders of super creepy fungi? Do we?? Do we???

Oh for loads of sunshine! *whimper*

TEENY TINY BUGS

... Courtesy the incessant Mumbai rains! :(

To say nothing of:
the damp
the fungus
the doggy-out-in-the-wet smell on things
the resultant cleaning up around the house!

And here I am, someone who normally loves the rains!

Oh, for a spot of sunshine...

HERE COMES THE RAIN!

Rich earth, the smell permeating your lungs. Flame of the Forest, laburnum and rain flowers jostling to display their fiery colours. A darkened sky, the rain beating down...
... The Gods have conspired to create the perfect magical rainy day!

HELLO, MR FROSTY

Not too sure about this cold thing. It's been between 1.6 and 2 degrees celcius the past couple of nights. Woke up at the ungodly hour of four in the a.m. to catch a train to Agra. Breathed in the Taj Mahal later in the day, but that's another story. Or blog. Or two. We're cheering tonight, seems the good ol' mercury's deigned to up itself by a couple of degrees.

Never mind the food, bring in the coffee and the moisturiser. And oh, don't forget the strawberry flavoured lip balm.
